Margaret Whiting encourages thoughtful consideration of the laws that regulate American society's impact on the land. As her media, she recycles old law books, science books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and maps.
Whiting grew up on the Mesabi Iron Range of Northern Minnesota and now lives in Waterloo, Iowa. She completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology at the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Art at the University of Northern Iowa. She worked as a medical technologist in hospital laboratories and taught workshops in paper-making and bookmaking.
Whiting has participated in numerous regional, national and international art exhibitions. She had solo shows at Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum, Mesa, AZ; Faulconer Gallery, Grinnell, IA; Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, NV; and the Kansas City Artists Coalition Gallery, Kansas City, MO. Her artwork was selected to into group exhibitions, including Armory Art Center, West Palm Beach, Fl; Hun Gallery, New York, NY; Gallery Meepyung, Seoul, Korea; Figge Art Museum, Davenport, IA; Center for Visual Arts, Denton, TX; Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Cedar Rapids, IA; University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art, Cedar Falls, IA; Waterloo Museum of Art, Waterloo, IA, and Manifest Creative Research Gallery, Cincinnati, OH.
Whiting is active in several environmental organizations and currently serves as Secretary of the Iowa Chapter Sierra Club.
